Windows 7 x64: Video Problems in World of Goo
« on: October 26, 2009, 04:54:04 AM »

I'm running the latest World of Goo in Windows 7, 64-bit and when I try to start the game, the screen goes blank, flickers, seems to try to switch to other resolutions, stays black, and generally is unusable.  Sometimes it will crash other programs (Firefox for one).  I'm using an nvidia geforce 9500GT card with the latest drivers.  Any suggestions?

Look in your config.txt file, and try changing the screen resolution and refresh rate to your current resolution and refresh rate.

Next things to try are DirectX and graphics drivers. Download the DirectX Web Setup from Microsoft and get the latest drivers for your graphic card from nVidia.

G'day,

I'm in the same boat here, but running the demo (I'd like to see what it is like before buying it).  The screen blanks, flickers, music plays, and nothing appears.  I have the latest ATI video drivers, and am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

I already have the latest nvidia drivers, and I did a clean install of Win7 so I would like to think that I have the latest DirectX as well.  Is it a problem with x64 or Win7 or what?

I tried Windows 7 today, though it's x86. I would rule drivers out, as you already got the latest you can get. The next things are graphics card itself and overall incompatibility. Not so much on the graphic card, but maybe you can try the Compatibility Mode with WoG. Right click the shortcut (or EXE), click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, and try different settings.

P. S.: To truly have the latest DirectX, you'd have to run the DirectX Web Setup (found on the Microsoft website). Reinstalling DirectX would just get rid of the newer DLLs.

Using the XP and Vista compatibility modes did NOT work for me.

I had exactly the same issue, running win7 x64, but the problem went away as soon as I unplugged my second monitor. Are you using dual screens?

I'm having the EXACT same problem.  Windows 7, x64, flashing screen as if its constantly trying to change resolutions and failing.  All my drivers are updated as much as possible.

I'm having the same problems as everyone else here.  (The smartass answer above of "it's not Windows 7 or WOG!" isn't exactly helpful, because it is one or the other.)

Windows 7 upgrade from Vista (where WOG worked).  ATI Radeon HD 4800 series.  Up-to-date drivers.  Other Direct X games seem fine.  One monitor 1280x1024, the other is 1440x900.  This is a paid-for brand-new fresh-installed downloaded-from-2dboy copy, so I know it's good.

WOG starts, the screen flashes like it's trying to find a resolution that works, and continues to do this.  Sometimes a windowed, black screen appears, sometimes I get a large cursor/pointer.  It never quite resolves itself, and flickers until my patience runs out.

What I've found:

  * Editing the config.txt file to have the correct resolution helps, but only if you know which monitor WOG is starting on.  That's the first puzzle.

If it starts on the 1440x900 monitor, and I have the config.txt properly edited, then WOG runs but things are 'out of place'.  In-game buttons are missing, the "pull handle" on the first level dangles below the screen, etc...

  * Switching off the 1440x900 monitor (using the Config->Display tools in Windows) works okay, in conjunction with editing the config.txt.  Having one monitor off completely blows, and having to edit my system configuration to play WOG sucks.

The config.txt file has a resolution of 800x600, but Windows 7 seems to resist going into that mode however WOG is doing it.  (At least, that's how it feels).  Fiddling around with the XP Mode (Win7 Ultimate) and other compatibility settings have no effect.

Sorry to reply to my own posting.  Here's some more info:

I've got the 1.30 version.  Just in case, I applied the patch.  No joy.

When I run the program I think it's trying to start on the 1440x900 monitor.  On the 1280x1024 monitor, it flashes and refreshes constantly.  If I keep that up, I see a seizure coming...

On the 1440x900 monitor, I get black.  Solid black.

Audio from the game comes out during all of this.
