Global Game Jam starts today! Here’s my keynote, “How to Make a Game in 48 Hours”
The 48-hour Global Game Jam has started! And here’s my “How to Make a Game in 48 Hours” keynote if anyone’s curious. It began first in New Zealand, and then as the Earth rotates, new jams pop up each hour in each new time zone, beginning at 5pm (each local time) Friday evening, with the last local jam beginning in San Francisco / LA. It was created and organized by the ever amazing Susan Gold, more info on the jam’s official site here – you can also view each location streaming live. Right now all I see is a bunch of kittens. -Kyle
Update: Several people have asked about the games I showed in the video. The majority of the fast clips were from the Experimental Gameplay Project. The “tree game” is a little toy called “Big Vine” which you can get here. “Illegal Communication” by Cactus is here and highly recommended. Gish is everywhere and needs no introduction.

Absolutely brilliant, though, where’s Ron these days? :P
I’d love to see my friend (http://spiritsofmetropolis.com) go to this one day. He’s an independent game designer trying to crack into the casual market though hasn’t really got the attention he deserves.
Also, cactus is a great designer ^^

Great presentation, thank you! :D
I tried to paraphrase your 7 tips on my blog (click my name for the link!). I hope you don’t mind. Let me know if I did a good job. :)
This Global Game Jam looks exciting. I really wish I could participate. Unfortunately, some difficulties both in time and space seem to be preventing my participation…
I am almost afraid to consider the immense flood of new games that is sure to result. :p But this is a good thing, right? I guess we’ll see what happens.

Can you share with us the song names that were in your video?

Thank,
Great vid, better than some of the Hollywood’s mainstream :D And this must have been the most beautifull nuke I have ever seen!
I wanted to ask about a name of the game at 6:01. It looks totally hot but I’ve never seen it before.

Goo Fan

Its also quite amazing that Cactus just uses GameMaker to make his stuff with. I guess it just goes to show you don’t need to know C++ or another big fancy language to make something that’s fun. :)

Very well done, Kyle. And good tips.

Don of Goo, search for “Adagio for Strings” and “Agnus Dei”. The particular version used in the video above (my favorite) comes from the soundtrack to the game Homeworld. It’s worth getting if you can find it.
