where to get the goo
launch day is coming up this monday and the 2d boys have never been so anxious and excited! world of goo will still be available for purchase on our website, and the boxed version is already available for pre-order on amazon.com.
starting this monday, you’ll also be able to purchase it on wiiware, steam, and direct2drive. the game’s nintendo channel page is already up as is the steam page. thanks to the two jasons and doug over at valve for helping us get the game set up with steamworks so quickly! (can you say achievements?). huge thanks to dan adelman at nintendo for all the help and support he’s given us over the last year.
the game will also be available on greenhouse, the most indie friendly portal there is. 2d boy cheers for penny arcade and hothead games for bringing it into existence.
last but not least, the good people at brighter minds, our retail publisher for the PC version in north america will make the game available on their new portal, beanstalk games. thanks ran and jody!
[ update: several people who have pre-ordered have asked us if they'd be able to activate the game on steam. we contacted valve about this and the answer is a big fat YES. when the game releases, anyone who pre-ordered from our website will be able to use their magic key to activate the game on steam. we're working with them right now to make this happen. ]

Can we have an option to register our pre-order copy purchased here @ Steam? I’d really like to have Steamworks & stuff in my game.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Woho! Steam is great and I love achievements!
October 10th, 2008 at 10:46 am
@tom
i emailed valve to inquire about this possibility. if we can make it happen we’ll post about it
October 10th, 2008 at 10:50 am
If achievements can be obtained on Steam, that would be awesome to be able to register the copy we already pre-ordered there. I’m kind of an achievement whore. :)
October 10th, 2008 at 10:57 am
The full link for the lazy to Beanstalk is http://beanstalkgames.com/games/view/world_of_goo.
October 10th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Yes, it seems rather frustrating to be cut off from achievements just because we were impatient enough to preorder.
October 10th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Great news Ron, should be possible as you are also integrating Steamworks, looking forward to hear any news on the subject :)

I finished the normal Windows version today, here my opinion:
In finished the game a few seconds ago with tears in my eyes. It’s difficult to find words do describe the quality of the game. I’ll write tomorrow the review for my gaming site and there is only one score I can give: 10 out of 10. The game doesn’t make any fault. It does everything correct. I mean. Look at the graphics. So beautiful. Forget hardware specs, this game looks on every system awesome. And the sound. Epic. I’ll put this music on my iPod and I’ll listen to it whenever it’s possible. A game sounded never so fabulous. The controls are fantastic and the gameplay? No words to discribe this. And of course there is a lot of variety.
3 meters behind me are a few hundred games. I enjoyed most of them and I can recommend most of them. But not a single game of my collection is as good as World of Goo. People. I played the demo of World of Goo a few months ago and it was fantastic. I looked forword to the game. I thought this may be one of the best games this year. And now, I played the full version. And it wasn’t one of the best games this year. It was the best game ever.
You know what to do!
October 10th, 2008 at 11:41 am
o good i thought no one would mention that! i was hoping someone would ask for those of us who pre-ordered would be able to receive steam works achievements :)
it could offer more challenges to go after :)
October 10th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Yea Steam! Good platform if you don’t live in a country where they censor your games based on your IP address.
October 10th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
w00t! Awesome! Thanks for integrating pre-orders with Steam, 2D Boy.
October 10th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
hope I would have a credit card :/
October 10th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
You guys are literally AWESOME :)
Great game, out on steam, and you even let us use our keys on steam, good job guys :)
October 10th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Guys,
Have you fixed the bug whereby, in World of Goo Corporation, you click ‘reset’ and then immediately exit, it crashes and deletes all your savegames?
Because really, I don’t think you should be sending this to any more people until you’ve fixed this showstopper.
You just deleted all my savegames. I mean, your game is fab and all, but really. That’s just shocking.
October 10th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
YEAAH! I love you 2dboy! :D I can play on steam with my preordered copy! :D Yahooo! :D
October 10th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
@martin
i’m sorry about the lost progress, i’m sure it’s frustrating. i’d be pretty angry too. to answer your question, yes, that bug’s been fixed and will make it out with the release on monday. people who already have a copy will be able to re-download a version that contains this fix
October 10th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Thanks 2DBoy! I’m really glad you guys have managed to get the magic keys to work on Steam. I’m not sure, but I think this is the first time that a third-party game has been able to transfer keys like this. And I thought World of Goo couldn’t get any better… Now I have to go back and get achievements too! Yay!
October 10th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Not the first David, but there’s definitely not many non-valve games that can be activated like that :)
October 10th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Honest question, which way of obtaining the game (WiiWare, Steam, here?) means the most money for you guys?
Bill
October 10th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Hey Bill, good question! Per unit, developers see more if you buy it directly from them. On the other hand, we decided to work only with portals who we liked, and who offered fair royalty splits, so we’re happy to share revenue with each of our distributors in return for getting our game out there and known by people outside the indie community.
October 10th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
In that case, and since I want my son to play this as well, it’s WiiWare for us :) He won’t notice it unless it’s a channel on the Wii!
And congratulations for the upcoming release. The game looks great all around.
Bill
October 10th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Direct will get them the most money. They get 50% from steam and WiiWare i have no idea about.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
I’m glad you guys can get your act together with activating on Steam. Unless Greenhouse >_>
October 10th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
@ Ron
That is very good, concerning the bug fix. Teensy bit disturbing! It was actually a bigger bother because it was suddenly difficult to show other people the game - I think it was inevitable that I would end up replaying the game. Though… would redownloading the game mean losing the progress I’ve made now? Oh dear! And I guess only the release on Monday would contain the fix?
October 10th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
PJS, the fix is already in and if you just download the game again using the same link you’ll have the fix. if you lost your progress, i’m afraid there’s no way to recover it, but if you haven’t, simply install the new version right over the old one (without uninstalling the old one) and you’ll keep your progress.
October 10th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Congratulations guys. I preordered WoG after reading about it on PA. Loved the preview world, and have checked in periodically since to see how your progress was going.
Finished the game last night, absolutely fantastic stuff! I have too many “work” projects on these days to really commit time to gaming, so games such as Portal and World Of Goo are a fantastic fit for my lifestyle.
Having grown up as a gamer, I’ve got a pretty finely tuned sense of game mechanic, and these days I tend to abandon “Feature-Length” games well before completing them, because I see the edges of the game world and get sick of doing the same thing over and over.
For me, WoG was absolutely perfect. New mechanics appeared often enough to keep things interesting, it didn’t require huge amounts of time to progress, can be played in short bursts, is quick to load and close (and I can alt+tab in and out without bringing my system to its knees), and when I finished it I wanted to start all over again! You guys have got the secret sauce, and have added the perfect amount to this project. I will confidently preorder any future game you put your name to.
Respect too on your customer-friendly distribution model. I’m sure it will turn up eventually on torrents, if you continue to be proactive in sharing this data it can only help the independent entertainment industries as a whole. I’ve worked with people who equate price with quality, who set price points high because they believe that consumers equate low prices with shoddy work. I believe that setting prices at a realistic level engenders respect from consumers, and will result in less filesharing and more revenue as a result. I really hope this is the case for you guys.
I’ll be picking up WoG for my Wii on Monday, so I can share it with “non-gamers” in that most friendly of platforms, and so I can tell them how indie gaming works, and how you’re part of the future. Thanks.
October 10th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Congrats, guys. This is really taking off.
October 11th, 2008 at 12:03 am
Sigh. Neither Amazon nor Beanstalk will ship the boxed version to Canada.
October 11th, 2008 at 12:40 am
Yay! Steam! Achivements! :) thanks guys!
October 11th, 2008 at 1:28 am
Yeah! You bet I’ll buy that!
October 11th, 2008 at 1:36 am
I love you, 2D Boy! :D
October 11th, 2008 at 2:01 am
Fantastic news! I prefer to have my games on steam if possible rather than having to store things on cd. Icing on the sweet cake that is this game.
October 11th, 2008 at 4:14 am
Wow, activating it on Steam. You guys rock! Seriously. Hope you get a demo out soon so people will get to try this lovely thing out.
October 11th, 2008 at 4:14 am
Thanks a bunch for pushing to get those who have already paid for your game to be able to activate it on steam, huge props on that one fellas.
October 11th, 2008 at 5:18 am
I love you guys!
October 11th, 2008 at 10:33 am
You guys really need to get a demo up on Steam and wherever you can. This is at it’s heart an indie game and most indie games just dont do well without a demo. And it’s at 20 bucks so it’s not just a sudden purchase.
I mean look at Audiosurf and all of the indie games on Steam, they have demos and are selling well
October 12th, 2008 at 2:16 am
Woo! Thanks Ron & Kyle for making the Steam activation possible. I use Steam a lot and It’s fun to be able to chat in-game & get achievements.
Here, have a hug! *Hugs* :)
October 12th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Holy Shit!!!
World of Goo on STEAM with steamworks….!! THANKS 2D BOY!!! THANKS!!!
October 12th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Fantastic game guys - loving it so far and massive (and i really mean massive) thanks for making steam activations possible!
October 12th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Does the steam activation apply to people who are NOW ordering from 2dboy directly. Or, does the offer only apply to those who previously pre-ordered.
October 12th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
we sent valve a list of keys earlier this evening, so people who want their game on steam should wait til tomorrow and buy it on steam.
October 13th, 2008 at 6:40 am
I was disappointed I’d be missing out on the Steam icing, having reserved the game from you two. No-DRM reserves, good pricing, and platform-upgrading are earning you loads of respect.
Respect for your customers/fans is hopefully paying off for you. I love your stuff!
October 17th, 2008 at 8:51 am
I downloaded this from a torrent, but it’s great so I’ll buy it.
The problem is the Steam version is not available in Europe yet, and I can’t seem to find the boxed game anywhere outside the US. I prefer either of these two versions and not a simple download.
Come on guys, lot’s of people in Europe want this. Why wait till March?
October 29th, 2008 at 8:29 am
I would like to buy this great game but I prefer Steam. In Europe it isn’t published yet, that’s terrible.
So i’ve to buy it next year (if i won’t forget) =(
November 13th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Since World of Goo is now available on Impulse, will those of us who pre-ordered be able to use our codes to activate on Impulse as well?
