the full scoop

okay, today was a BIG day for 2d boy. we posted a quick note about it earlier, which raised more questions than it answered, so let’s try to answer all of them:
Q: when will the game be released?
A: monday, october 13.
Q: what platforms will it be available on when it launches?
A: world of goo will be released on wiiware in north america. a windows version will be simultaneously released on our website and a handful of well regarded digital distribution channels that we will announce early next week.
Q: how much will it cost?
A: the wiiware version will cost 1500 points. the pc version will cost $20 (US).
Q: when will people who pre-ordered get it?
A: we’ll start sending out download links to people who pre-ordered on monday (oct 6). our crappy service provider limits the number of emails we can send out per hour so it may take a while to get to everyone, but if you pre-ordered, we can assure you that you will get your goo sometime this coming week and well before all the commoners :). thank you for having faith in us and supporting us through development of the game!
Q: what about the mac/linux versions?
A: everyone who orders the game through our site will have access to all three versions. buy once, run on any OS. that said, the mac and linux versions aren’t ready yet. mac will be done first, then linux. we don’t have exact dates yet.
Q: do pre-orders get the game as a download or a box?
A: download only.
Q: but what if i want it in a box?
A: the pc version will start becoming available at retail stores in north america around the first week of november. when we have more details on which stores will carry it, we’ll let you know.
Q: what about europe?
A: world of goo is scheduled for european release as a disc based wii game in the first quarter of 2009. we realized we caused some grief for european gamers with this choice and we apologize. it’s our first time putting out a game and we don’t plan on doing this kind of split again
Q: what about the profanity pack, mother****ers?
A: it’s coming but it won’t be available on launch. everyone who pre-ordered will be notified by email with a download link when it’s ready.
<update>
Q: will there be a free demo?
A: not at first, but we’ll make one available down the line
</update>

Ugh, a longer wait for linux.. :( Looking forward to it, though!
Is there a place to sign up to be a beta tester for the linux build?
October 4th, 2008 at 12:43 am
Thanks for the clarifications.
I had been hoping to get this for the Wii so I could share it more easily with my family. But I don’t think I’d be willing to wait ’til next year. To the pre-order-mobile!

It’ll be on steam, here’s hoping that unlike other devs you actually bother making us able to add the game to steam so we can download it through steam and use all of the features associated.
But i doubt it.
October 4th, 2008 at 8:44 am
Only 1500 points? Wow. I was ready to pay anything.
The 13th can’t come fast enough.
October 4th, 2008 at 8:56 am
I’m in the UK….
Yaaaaayyy!! PC version, cant wait to download and play, my five year old son absolutely adores the pre-release. (Must remember not to install the profanity pack!)
Booo00000!!! Wii version, so we have to wait until next year AND have to pay an over inflated price for the disc version rather than get it from wiiware. Not going to go there, shame.
Well done on the release guys, you deserve all the success this will bring.

I’m hoping that the pre-order download link gets emailed to me with everyone else’s, unlike what happened when the preview was released…

Happy to hear that finally I can goo around. ;D
And also next week already. :o
October 5th, 2008 at 6:31 am
Great news! The long wait has finally paid off. Congrats on finishing guys
October 5th, 2008 at 7:12 am
>on the bright side, the US dollar isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on, so you’ll be able to get it for cheap with your fancy euros :)
This implies we are paying the same price as americans for the wiiware version? So a real currency conversion? Otherwise the above statement is completely misleading.
Nevertheless, it does appear as if you would rather receive dollars than euro’s, since you are treating us as second rate customers..
1) We have to wait longer to get the game
2) We have to pay more (i simply don’t believe it will be 10 euro’s which would be the equivalent of 15 dollars.. 1500 wii points).. sorry just don’t believe you will put out a wii disc based game and charge 10 euro’s..
3) We have to put in the disc .. to play the game
4) Have to wait for loading screens because discs are slower than flash-based storage
5) Loose the risk of loosing the game because of scratches on the disc
All in all .. LESS VALUE .. LONGER WAITING .. HIGHER PRICE
You can’t really bullshit your way around that.. sorry, to say that so mean.
But if you are screwing us (every other game company is doing exactly the same anyway) .. at least be honest enough to just f__ admit it.
Be fair about it. You are not giving the same value, the same treatment .. and we are never ever going to pay the same price.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:39 am
Oh and don’t get me wrong.
IT WILL BE WORTH WHATEVER YOU ASK FOR IT
But on an emotional level it’s hard to see why Americans would deserve the pay even less.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:10 am
I just can’t wait for tomorrow :D
When I played through the chapter 1 I was set for high expectations.
From those reviews I have the feeling that waiting all that time (ever since the tower of goo was created, and you announced world of goo) will pay of :3
October 5th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Meneer R… you do realise that Europe is being compensated by an extra level at the end, right?
October 5th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Meneer R,
This is totally true, but 2DBoy doesn’t have complete control over the situation. Why is WOG not on WiiWare in Europe? Because NINTENDO only wanted to put it on the NA WiiWare shop. So the only path left is Retail, as there’s no other way to get the game on a Wii besides Retail and WiiWare/Wii shop.
And yes, it will be more expensive. Again, this is not 2DBoy’s decision. RTL decides the price, as they’re shipping it out. 2DBoy will only get a small percentage of sales, which I think is the same amount of money they get from an online purchase.
So just to make things clear, this was the only way we Europeans can get our grubby hands on the Wii version of WOG, and this is neither Kyle’s nor Ron’s fault.

October 5th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Forgot one thing,
About the wait, 2DBoy tries to give us some extra value for our money, which is a fifth chapter & a new sandbox mode. This will take some time of course, and RTL will also need some time to negotiate with shops and get the game printed and shipped.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Meener R: They meant the downloadable PC version: that’s the same price all around the world.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
True. When I pre-ordered, it only cost 13 euros. That’s, like, don’t eat for 2 days and you have enough :P
(It’s a 14 something now, the dollar is gaining again :P Dang :P)

October 5th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I’d rather have it on a disc with wii then wiiware. Then I can take it to my brother’s house to play on his wii, loan to friends, etc.
if only the wii wasn’t region locked!
October 5th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
yay! I’m greatly anticipating my download link.
October 7th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Alright, so we are being compensated with an extra level and sandbox mode.
I especially like the sound of that last one.
Will, the disc-based version also often the ability to transfer the game to the wii?
It’s weird because, in 2008, a customer like me, considers disc to be of less value than the ability to download (and re-download .. )
I’m still torn. I run linux and own a Wii. I tend to prefer the Wii version because that’s where I think of ‘games’. Also, I think it’s hard to keep supporting a linux game. It’s just much harder for developers, and undoubtfully, it will be difficult to ‘garantuee’ the linux version will work with Ubuntu 10.20 (then again, such garantuees stopped applying to windows/dos games a long time ago as well)
I guess in the end i will get which ever one is available to me sooner.

I just think it’s ridiculous we can’t get the wiiware version in Europe.
October 21st, 2008 at 6:42 am
Dont tell us, ppl in Europe, that the boxed version will be the same price as the wiiware version!!! It Will Not be the same, even just because the shipping and stalling of the boxed version will cost money to companies. I was so exited to get this game on wiiware for 15 euros, but I now that new boxed games are nevereverever below 25 euros (more than 35 US dollars). so in US they pay 15 dollars, in europe we pay 35. And dont use the ‘extra content’ as an excuse!! It’s probably not 2dboys fault, but nevertheless we are being ripped of here in europe.
October 21st, 2008 at 6:46 am
wait… I just read it again: ‘we realized we caused some grief for european gamers with THIS CHOICE and we apologize. it’s our first time putting out a game and we DONT PLAN ON DOING THIS KIND OF SPLIT AGIAN’
well there u have it, it seems like a choice and planning from 2dboy…. Did you guys really planned this? Man im really getting angry about this…

November 5th, 2008 at 2:03 am
Hello,
I am wondering when we can pre-order the european Wii version?
November 14th, 2008 at 6:44 am
what?!?! so its not coming out in europe on wiiware! that is a load of crap!! why would you have bothered bringing it out on disc?! i was dying to buy this online on my wii because it is such less hassle and i betcha that the disc price is gonna be a rip off compare to the wiiware price!
If not then i’ll be very happy!hehe
savage game btw
